Sun conjuct Mercury in Capricorn – Quoth the Raven, ’Nevermore’

Sun Mercury Capricorn

Sun conjunct Mercury will occur on December 28th, 2016 at 18:47:15 UT (13:47:15 EST). Thanks to the value of the Mercury’s greatest elongation (28°) this is the only exact aspect which can be formed between these two planets.

This conjunction in tropical Capricorn indicates generally a thoughtful and concentrated spirit, a philosophic or scientist mind, but – corresponding to the ’saturnine’ qualities of this sign – inclined also to extreme abstractions and/or barbed criticism, with an almost infinite tenacity and often headstrongness. By the same token, the native is prepared here to get acquainted with the ’powers of the dark side’ (often) without fear, to delve into the depths of whatever sufferings or sorrow, keeping at the same time a severe self-analysis. If the native suffers or causes suffering, it’s never ’incidental’ or ’superficial’ but ’methodical’ and ’deeply penetrating’, that sometimes, with other strongly afflicted planets (most of all, the Saturn and the Pluto), may even result in masochism or sadism (mainly if, besides those afflictions, Mercury is also retrograde).

In his birth chart, Edgar Allan Poe had an exact Sun–Mercury conjunction in tropical Capricorn; the orb was less than 13 arcminutes, thus his Mercury, at least as projected point to the Ecliptic, ’stood within the Sun disk’, forming – by the term of the medieval astrologers – a ’Cazimi’, which is considered as prosperous and ’bestowing some kind of brilliance or genius’. (However, except for this favourable ’Cazimi’ position, in the medieval astrology, planets in conjunction with the Sun within /generally/ an orb of 8 arcdegrees were qualified as ’debilated ’ and called ’Combust’.)

As he was writer and poet having this exact conjunction in the 3rd house of his natal chart, we are in a relatively easy position to understand its specific agency because the artist reveals it by expressing himself; and really, Poe’s ’dark romanticism’ has such recurring themes as death (including its accurately described physical signs and the effects of decomposition), concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, murders, mourning, sufferings and sorrow… But beyond ’horror’, Poe also wrote satires, humor tales, and hoaxes with typically ’saturnine’ irony, sarcasm and ludicrous extravagance. (Of course, we must not fail to mention other important factors of his radix like his Scorpio ascendant and a very important cumulation of planets in Pisces (Venus, Moon, Pluto, Jupiter), indicating together a distinct tendency for addictions, unfocused living, hipersensitivity and inordinate hunting after mysteries.)

Nostradamus also had a Sun–Mercury conjunction in tropical Capricorn near his M.C. Evidently, it is ’too dry’ as indication to have an efficient prophetic aptitude; for this, the dominance of the ’water signs’ is essential. And truly, Nostradamus had a natal ’watery’ ’Grand Trine’ formed by /(Jupiter conj. Saturn conj. Mars): CAN/ trine /Moon: SCO/ trine /Uranus: PIS/. (But he paid the price of his spiritual faculty at the somatic level having had a chronic dropsy that led to his death). In short, concerning Nostradamus’ prophetic aptitude, this Sun conjunct Mercury in Capricorn is not the principal, but it is important indication to be a ’prophet of doom’ (because, as it is commonly known, his visions involve mostly war, decay and death).

Marlene Dietrich also had a Sun–Mercury conjunction in Capricorn – at the cusp of the 5th house of her natal chart. She was the earliest world-famed ’sex symbol’ of the history of cinema. Mainly in the 1930s, she called into existence a new female character, unknown before, named ’wamp’, which is a designing, demi-mondaine woman with smashing but at the same time chill erotic magnetism. What could be a better astrological indication for getting into shape this emblematic female character than a Sun conjunct Mercury in Capricorn, at the cusp of the 5th natal house?  >> More Info
