Mars’ perigee & greatest brilliancy in 2016. Just after Sun opposite Mars, around its perigee, passing within 0.50 AU of us, Mars will reach its greatest brilliancy on 22nd or 23rd May, depending on your TZ. (It will have attained Jupiter’s brightness, almost – but it’ll be harder to mistake Mars for Jupiter, because Mars will be distinctly reddish. 🙂 ) Even if clouds block your view of Mars on Sunday night, the Red Planet should remain especially bright for several weeks. Do not miss it.
